American Leftist’s Love Affair with Soviet Russia - 1920’s

  Lenin was admired by many in the American Left, including economist Rexford Guy Tugwell, Social Worker Jane Addams, philosopher John Dewey, labor leader Sidney Hillman, and many more. These people were not communists, simply they liked Lenin’s principle of doing whatever needed to be done, in order to bring about the end result, in this case a “scientific socialism”, a shining society! Ever hear the quote “ “The welfare of humanity is always the alibi of tyrants”?

  One trial as old as time, is human beings attempting to bring about a form of heaven, or utopia, on Earth. Unity, equality, fairness…doing away with greed, sharing, not discriminating against anyone, etc. While all of that sounds nice, people who dream of this fail to take into account that morality cannot be perfected because the very nature of man is that he or she is a sinner and imperfect. We must be realists, not live in a universe of lies and illusion. History shows certain groups have time and time again bought into lies and illusion such as some of these leftists in America in the 1920’s. They only saw what they wanted to see, a hope and a possibility for real change and success in a system which could potentially change the world for the better! But they rejected any evidence to the contrary, writing it off.

The same thing is happening today as history repeats itself. You can remind individuals of the history of socialism (tyranny, oppression, death, destruction) and yet…they somehow think this time it will be different. It won’t be! Thankfully, however, God is in control. No matter what may happen in this world, it is all in His hands! I am very thankful for that!
